Snake boat races in kerala

Snake boat racing season starts with The Chambakkulam boat race is held on the Moolam star in the month of ‘Mithunam’ in the Malayalam calendar.

There will be participation of 19 boats, including five ‘chundan valloms’ (snake boats) capable of accommodating over 100 oarsmen each.
Smaller ones called ‘churulan’, ‘oadi’ and ‘veppu’ are the other categories of boats taking part in the race.

Other boat races are  Neerettupuram, Pulinkunnu, Karuvatta, Haripad, Mannar, and Kayamkulam.

Nehru trophy boat race at Punnamada in August will be the most prestigious event among the boat races.

Reading week celebrations alappuzha kerala

The alappuzha district administration will organise reading week celebrations from June 19 to 25, 2015.

Reading Day will be observed on June 19.

. A rally to highlight the importance of reading will be taken out from SD College to the home of P.N. Panikker, a pioneer in library movement, at Neelamperoor.

Farming in Kuttanad alappuzha

The Kuttanad region is broadly classified into three divisions:

Lower Kuttanad
Upper Kuttanad
North Kuttanad
Lower Kuttanad comprises taluks of Ambalapuzha taluk, Kuttanad (excluding Edathua, Thalavady and Muttar, and the northern half of Karthikapally taluk in Alappuzha district).

Upper Kuttanad comprises Veeyapuram village in Karthikapally taluk, Edathua,Thalavady, Kidangara and Muttar in Kuttanad taluk; Chennithala village in Mavelikkara Taluk, Mannar, Kuruttissery, Budhanur, Ennakkad villages in Chengannur taluk of Alappuzha district; and Parumala, Kadapra, Niranam, Pulikeezhu, Peringara,Chathenkeri, Nedumpuram, villages of Thiruvalla taluk in Pathanamthitta district.

North Kuttanad comprises Vaikom taluk, western parts of Kottayam taluk, and western parts of Changanacherry taluk in Kottayam district.

It is noted for its farming below sea level (about 4 to 10 feet). Four major rivers in Kerala viz. Pampa, Meenachil, Achankovil and Manimala flow into the region.
